The pieces are very well developed and easy to see. Quite simple to tell the bishop from the pawn unless you are a novice or four years old. Actually was a bit better quality than I was expecting. Pieces have magnets and stick litely to the board. I wanted this set to analyze positions, when playing against the computer or reviewing a game that caught my attention. I've also found that it's perfect for a weekend on the little weekender sailboat with the family. It's not so small that you'll suffer eye strain. Only $5.00 but worth $10. My favorite set. It is bigger than some of the other cheap conventional magnetic sets but not as exaggerated in proportion as some of the other larger plastic magnetic sets that sell for a lot more. I like the fact that the board playing surface is not made of some of that well known painted type of scratchy metal; just like some other similar sets I've had in the past and that I'm sure you all know about. Instead, the surface is of a pleasant to the eye type of resilient plasticized paper or tape that faithfully sticks to the magnetic surface area to which it is well glued. The white and green squares create a very nice contrast with the pieces, which do not look too crowded on the squares. However, I am the most thrilled with the quality of the pieces themselves and the great amount of detail that has been put in such a little set....check out the knights and bishops for example..The magnets are not the strongest but fairly strong enough...This set is a steal both in terms of quality and functionality.

Just make sure you pick up all the pieces before going to sleep. :-)The pieces stick even when held upside down. The pieces have decent variances in height (I hate sets where the pieces are nearly the same height as the pawns) and are easy to grab considering the small size. On my next order I will probably buy two more of these, one to keep at work and one for the car. I based the rating on a value vs price scale. For 5 bucks this easily gets 5 stars.

My son replaced the magnet with one of his own (super strong one, of course, now the piece almost won't come off the board - ha!). I think this will be good on trips, but we haven't been able to test it yet.
